George Schmerholz – Amazing Ability Crossed With Un-

Bridleled Vision = True Artistic Genius

Megaptera George Schmerholz

Georg Schmerholz - "Megaptera" - Pierre Green Granite Sculpture

“Of the many different sculptural processes, from a particular point of view, carving comes closest to being a perfect metaphor for life”.

“When the sculptor looks at a rough piece of stone, be it a solid 25 ton block of granite or a diminutive, less than perfect, chunk of Jade, the possibilities are endless, even with the perceived shortcomings of inclusions, fracture planes, flows and color variations’.

The artist’s function then should be to observe, ‘listen’ and discover what is the stone’s “true calling’, what is it that IT wants to become to express the beauty that it inherently contains beyond its form. as all Beings do, including the Human one. Or, find the right stone that contains one’s vision”.

“Flaws become character and uniqueness through the carving process and to quote Antoine de Saint-Exupery, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”. From this perspective, the sculptor is only a ‘facilitator’ in this process of balancing and integrating the Inner and the Outer, and it is magical when it happens”.

Shibumi H2H George Schmerholz

Georg Schmerholz - "Shibumi" & "Heart 2 Heart" - 'Polar' Nephrite Jade and Bronze

What I have come to realize in my own process, Is that while using the language of sculpture: mass. form, design, line, surface, texture, etc. what really guides me is not the surface form itself, but the emotional response I project the sculpture to generate in the viewer when completed. As I work the form and  change the shape, the sculpture is only finished when its vibrational frequency comes into alignment with the resonance I envision for it. The creative process is just as important as the finished piece, both reflective of the artist’s identity”.

Applying this concept to life, we are all creators of our own, with unlimited outcomes within the given qualities and flaws, but finding the best and the most beautiful will happen when all the superfluous is taken away so we can arrive to purity of intention and essence of purpose”.
